USDT yield: where Tether earns interest
USDT is the largest stablecoin, but in DeFi it has fewer large single-asset pools than USDC and usually pays a little less. Here is where it earns, what the big pools paid and what US holders should know.

USDT key facts
| Issuer | Tether (Tether International, S.A. de C.V.). |
|---|---|
| Backing | Mostly US government-backed instruments, plus gold and bitcoin. BDO attested $187.75B of assets against $183.64B of liabilities on 30 June 2026. |
| Reserve reporting | Quarterly attestations, which are not audits; circulation figures are published daily. |
| Pays holders interest? | No. Tether keeps the reserve income; its Q2 2026 net operating profit was about $1.5B. |
| US holders | Tether’s terms state that US persons, other than eligible contract participants it approves, are prohibited from holding or using Tether tokens. USA₮ (USAT), a separate US-regulated coin issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, launched in January 2026. |
| Cross-chain | USDT0, run by Everdawn Labs rather than Tether, locks USDT on Ethereum and mints it one for one on 15+ chains. |
Where USDT yield comes from
The routes are the same as for any stablecoin, but the mix differs:
- Lending markets. Borrowers pay interest to borrow USDT. Rates swing with demand for leverage, especially in busy markets.
- Stablecoin pairs. USDT is one of the most common assets in stablecoin-to-stablecoin pools: 25 pairs of $1M or more included it on 13 October 2026. Pairs earn trading fees and often reward tokens.
- Vaults and credit strategies. Some vaults lend USDT on to institutions or run automated strategies, for more yield and more risk.
- Exchange programmes. Many exchanges pay a rate on USDT. That is the exchange’s offer, under its terms, not Tether’s.
Why USDT often pays less than USDC in DeFi
In the 13 October 2026 snapshot there were 36 single-asset USDT pools of $1M or more across 10 chains, against 152 USDC pools across 21 chains. The USDT median was 3.58% and the middle half paid 3.15% to 5.69%.
Fewer large pools means fewer strategies competing for deposits. When you compare, line up the same kind of pool on the same chain: a USDT lending market against a USDC lending market, not against a USDC credit vault.
Risks specific to USDT
- Reserve mix. Part of the backing is gold and bitcoin, whose prices move, and the reports are attestations rather than full audits.
- Freezes. Tether can freeze addresses, and has done so at the request of law enforcement.
- Bridged versions. USDT0 and other bridged forms add the bridge’s own smart-contract and operator risk.
- Eligibility. Tether’s terms restrict US persons; check the terms of the platform you use, too.
How to find the best USDT yield for you
- Open the live list. USDT pools of $1M or more, largest first, so tiny pools with outsized rates don’t crowd the top.
- Check what pays the APY. The list shows each pool’s base and reward split and its 30-day median and range. A free account opens the full history and the evidence checks still missing.
- Price the move. Use the APY calculator to see whether a higher rate pays back the gas and fees of switching.
- Set an alert, not a reminder. With a free account, get told in the app, by email or on Discord when your USDT pool’s APY or TVL crosses your line.
USDT yield FAQ
Can you earn interest on USDT?
Not from Tether, which keeps its reserve income. You can earn by lending USDT on DeFi markets, supplying it to stablecoin pools or vaults, or through an exchange’s own programme, each with its own risks and terms.
How much does USDT yield?
On 13 October 2026, single-asset USDT pools of $1M or more in DeFi had a median APY of 3.58%, with half paying between 3.15% and 5.69%. Rates change daily, so check the live list before you move money.
What is USDT0?
USDT0 is an omnichain version of USDT built on LayerZero. USDT is locked on Ethereum and USDT0 is minted one for one on other chains. It is run by Everdawn Labs, not Tether, so it adds bridge and operator risk.
Is USDT safe to lend?
Lending USDT adds the lending market’s risks to USDT’s own: smart-contract bugs, bad debt if collateral falls too fast, and withdrawal limits when most of the pool is borrowed. No stablecoin yield is insured.
