PYUSD yield: PayPal rewards or DeFi?
PYUSD is issued by Paxos and distributed by PayPal, so it has an unusual choice: a simple rewards programme inside PayPal, or DeFi markets where you hold it yourself. Here is how each works and what each pays.

PayPal’s PYUSD rewards, explained
Eligible PayPal and Venmo users in the US can opt in to earn rewards on the PYUSD they hold there. PayPal works out the reward on your average daily balance and pays it monthly in PYUSD. The rate is variable and set by PayPal, which can change or end the programme.
Because PayPal holds the coins, there is no gas, no wallet and no smart-contract risk, but you rely on PayPal and its eligibility rules. Check in the app whether your state is included.
Earning on PYUSD in DeFi
Move PYUSD to your own wallet and it can be lent or pooled like any stablecoin. On 13 October 2026, 10 single-asset PYUSD pools of $1M or more spread across 2 chains had a median APY of 3.84%, with half paying between 3.35% and 6.26%. 8 stablecoin pairs of that size included PYUSD.
The DeFi market for PYUSD is much smaller than for USDC, so a few large deposits or reward programmes can move its rates quickly.
Rewards or DeFi: which fits?
- PayPal rewards suit you if you want simplicity, already use PayPal or Venmo and are eligible.
- DeFi suits you if you want to hold the coins yourself and compare rates across markets, and you accept smart-contract risk and gas.
- Either way, compare against the 4% PayPal advertises: a DeFi rate below it pays you less for more risk.
How to find the best PYUSD yield for you
- Open the live list. PYUSD pools of $1M or more, largest first, so tiny pools with outsized rates don’t crowd the top.
- Check what pays the APY. The list shows each pool’s base and reward split and its 30-day median and range. A free account opens the full history and the evidence checks still missing.
- Price the move. Use the APY calculator to see whether a higher rate pays back the gas and fees of switching.
- Set an alert, not a reminder. With a free account, get told in the app, by email or on Discord when your PYUSD pool’s APY or TVL crosses your line.
PYUSD yield FAQ
How do PYUSD rewards work?
Eligible US PayPal and Venmo users opt in and hold at least 1 PYUSD. PayPal calculates a variable annual reward on the average daily balance and pays it monthly in PYUSD. It advertised 4% in October 2026.
Who pays PYUSD rewards?
PayPal runs the programme, pays the rewards and sets the rate at its sole discretion. Paxos issues PYUSD but does not pay holders anything, and the terms of the arrangement between the two are not public.
Can I earn more on PYUSD in DeFi?
Sometimes. On 13 October 2026, the median single-asset PYUSD pool of $1M or more paid 3.84% and the top quarter paid 6.26% or more. Higher DeFi rates come with smart-contract risk, gas and rates that can fall quickly.
