How to research a DeFi yield without giving any app your keys
How do you research a DeFi yield without giving any app your private keys?
Research needs no wallet at all: yield data is public, so you can look up a pool’s rate, what pays it, its history and its size in a read-only tool, and no legitimate research site needs your private key or seed phrase. Keep the wallet for the moment you act, on the protocol’s own site.
This guide is about research; it is not advice on where to put money.
Disclosure: we make web3juice, a read-only research tool mentioned below.
What three rules apply before you start?
- Never type a seed phrase or private key into any website or app you use for research.
- Connecting a wallet is not needed to read data. If a research page asks you to connect or sign before it shows anything, use another source.
- Signing is an action, not a lookup. A signature can approve spending. Research never needs one.
How do you research a pool step by step?
1. Find the pool in a read-only tool
Use a tool that lets you browse without a wallet. On web3juice, search, filters and CSV export need no account at all, and the site never asks for keys or signatures.
2. Check what pays the rate
See whether the APY is base interest and fees or reward tokens. See base APY vs reward APY.
3. Look past today’s figure
Check the 30-day median and range, and the 90-day history. See how to check a pool’s historical APY.
4. Check the pool’s size and the data’s age
A small or shrinking TVL means a few large withdrawals can change the rate quickly. Check when the figure was retrieved: a stale number looks the same as a fresh one unless the tool tells you.
5. Check the evidence, and what is missing
Look for audits that match the deployed contract, how long the protocol has run and who can change it. On web3juice, a draft evidence score from six checks shows which checks are still missing; a check without reviewed evidence scores zero, so a gap never looks like a pass.
6. Follow it before and after you decide
Add the pool to a watchlist and set an alert on its APY or TVL. If you act later, you do it on the protocol’s own site, with your own wallet.
Which tools work without a wallet?
The next question is which tools to use. We compared them:

Research and monitoring only: web3juice never holds funds, asks for keys or executes trades. APYs change constantly and are not a promise of returns. Principal can be lost. Nothing on this page is financial advice.
