How to check a DeFi pool’s historical APY
How do you check a DeFi pool’s historical APY, and why does the 30-day median matter?
Today’s APY is a snapshot, annualised from recent activity, and it can change several times a day, so a pool is better judged by its history: the median over 30 days shows what it has typically paid, and the range shows how far it swings. Compare that with today’s figure before reading anything into it.
This guide explains how to read yield data; it is not advice on where to put money.
Disclosure: we make web3juice, a research tool mentioned below.
Why do DeFi APYs swing?
- Borrowing demand changes. In lending markets the rate rises when more of the pool is borrowed and falls when borrowers repay.
- Trading activity changes. Liquidity pools collect fees from trades, so a busy day lifts the figure and a quiet one lowers it.
- Rewards change. Reward programmes start, end and are resized, and the reward token’s price moves.
- Deposits come and go. A large deposit spreads the same interest or rewards across more money.
- It is annualised. A short burst of activity, scaled to a year, can produce a figure that will not last.
How do you read the history?
| What to look at | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Today’s APY | The latest annualised figure, and when it was retrieved |
| 30-day median | What the pool has typically paid recently, less moved by one-off spikes than an average |
| 30-day range | How far it has swung: a narrow range is steadier than a wide one |
| 90-day history | Whether the pool has drifted up or down over a longer period |
| TVL beside it | Whether the pool is growing, steady or shrinking while the rate moves |
A rule of thumb for reading, not deciding: if today’s APY is well outside the 30-day range, look for the cause before you rely on it.
How do you compare several pools side by side?
- Filter to the pools you are considering, for example by asset, chain and a minimum TVL.
- Put them next to each other over the same window (30 or 90 days).
- Compare the median and range, not today’s figure alone.
- Check the base and reward split for each: see base APY vs reward APY.
On web3juice every pool in the list shows its 30-day median and range; a free account opens 7, 30 and 90-day history for each pool, and Pro puts up to four pools side by side in the app. An AI assistant connected to web3juice’s MCP server can compare two to five pools with their 30-day ranges.
Which tools show APY history?
That is the next question. We compared them:
